SOLAR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

Renewable energy is here to stay. It’s only going to become more popular in the coming years. Solar energy has become a proven solution for any home’s electrical needs. No more relying so heavily on your local electric provider. With an investment in solar, not only can you reduce your electric bill drastically, but you can even become fully self-sufficient! Learn more about RSP Solar below, and don’t hesitate to contact RSP if you have any questions.

ROOF MOUNTS

Roof-mounted solar systems utilize otherwise unused space, making them ideal for properties with limited land. Installation costs are typically lower compared to ground-mounted alternatives. They keep valuable yard space free for other activities while protecting your roof from degrading elements like UV light, wind, rain, and snow. For homes with sufficient roof size, proper angle, and orientation (ideally south-facing), roof-mounted systems provide an efficient solution that doesn’t consume ground space.

GROUND MOUNTS

Ground-mounted solar systems offer superior positioning for optimal angle and orientation regardless of roof constraints. These systems typically receive more sunlight, generating more energy. Better airflow keeps ground-mounted panels cooler, improving efficiency. Ideal for properties with unsuitable roofs or larger systems. Future expansion is simpler with ground mounts, allowing you to add panels as your energy needs change over time.

tracking mounts

Solar tracking mounts are the most advanced mounting technology, automatically adjusting position to follow the sun throughout the day. Dual-axis trackers follow the sun in both east-to-west and north-to-south directions, increasing energy efficiency. While more expensive initially, tracking mounts are ideal for locations with limited installation space or where fewer panels are essential.

solar canopy

Solar canopies transform underutilized parking areas into renewable energy generators. These structures provide vehicle protection from weather elements while simultaneously producing clean electricity, making them practical for homeowners, businesses, and organizations looking to adopt renewable energy without dedicating additional land.

How long does installation take?

On average, the installation of a ground system takes about one to two days, and the roof mount takes one to three. Once installed, the utility provider will need to give approval, and the time for that to be completed will vary.

Right now, actually! In the United States, the tax incentives for solar are the best they have ever been. With these incentives comes a lower overall cost for solar that we have never seen before. As solar gets more popular, we can expect these tax incentives to lessen, making now the hottest time to get into solar.

Based on your type of panel, power output, and wattage, cold weather can increase your panel’s output. Solar panels can still generate power in snowfall, and sometimes even have improved performance in cold weather.

Most solar panels come with 25-30-year warranties, but they typically continue producing electricity well beyond this period. Production efficiency may gradually decrease over time, with many manufacturers guaranteeing at least 80% of the original output after 25 years.

Solar systems require minimal maintenance. Most systems are self-cleaning through rainfall, though occasional professional inspection (every 3-5 years) is recommended to check electrical connections and overall performance. In areas with heavy pollen, dust, or snow, periodic cleaning may help maintain optimal efficiency.

  • Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC): 30% tax credit on the total cost of your solar system. This incentive ends December 31st, 2025. For an average Illinois system, this represents approximately $6,750-$7,740 in savings.
  • Illinois Shines Program: Provides upfront payments based on your system’s expected Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) production over 15 years. Rates vary by utility and system size, but represent significant savings. Note: The program block for small residential systems under 25kW is currently full for 2024-2025, but you can join the waitlist for 2025-2026 funding.
  • Property Tax Exemption: Solar installations won’t increase your property tax assessment in Illinois, despite adding value to your home. You’ll need to file the State of Illinois PTAX-330 property tax form with your local county assessor.
  • Net Metering: Systems installed before January 1, 2025, are grandfathered into full retail net metering for the system’s lifetime. Systems installed after this date will receive “supply-only” net metering, where credits apply only to supply and transmission charges (not delivery charges).
  • Utility-Specific Incentives: ComEd and Ameren offer a $300 per kWh rebate for battery storage systems, plus potential demand response program incentives. Systems must include “smart inverters” to qualify.
  • Illinois Solar for All (ILSFA): Income-eligible residents can receive additional incentives that guarantee energy bill savings through approved vendors.

System size depends on your electricity usage, available roof space, budget, and energy goals. A common approach is sizing the system to offset 100% of your annual electricity consumption, which can be calculated from your utility bills. Most residential systems range from 5-10 kilowatts.

Yes, batteries can be added to most solar systems, even retroactively to existing installations. Battery storage allows you to store excess energy for use during outages or peak electricity rate periods.
